Service Center Network For over 30 years Staff Development has been a very prominent element in the success of adult education providers in Illinois. The Illinois Adult Education Service Center was first administered by the Illinois State Board of Education and is now administered by the Illinois Community College Board. The network is currently comprised of three regional centers and one center with statewide responsibility. The regional centers are the Southern Illinois Professional Development Center (Edwardsville), the Central Illinois Adult Education Service Center (Macomb), and the Adult Learning Resource Center of Northern Illinois (Des Plaines). The statewide center is the Illinois Professional development Partnership Center (Bloomington). The network functions in many endeavors in a collaborative manner, while at the same time recognizing that professional development needs vary among regions. Staff development focuses on helping classroom teachers to be more effective, with instructional practices based on adult learning theory and an integrated and engaged approach to learning. Activities include regional and statewide conferences, regional and on-site workshops, technical assistance, and facilitation of meetings for state staff and for special interest groups such as ESL, family literacy, special learning needs, and workforce development. The three regional centers maintain lending or non lending libraries and publish a variety of publications, including teaching resource manuals and newsletters. Administrators, teaching staff, and tutors of adult basic education, adult secondary education, and English as a second language programs are served. Contact Information:
